Bucharest Pt.3

And so, mes amies, it’s time for the final instalment of my Bucharest travel diaries. What an adventure it’s been! Most people in my position would probably have condensed the whole thing into a couple of posts but you know that’s never going to be the case with me. Believe it or not I did actually try to keep things succinct, yet here we are on number three… Of the travel element at least. There’s a fair bit of fashion and beauty stuff from our Romanian excursion still to come. For now, I’m going to pick things up where we left off diary wise last week… Promise I’ll keep it short and sweet.

In case you hadn’t realised already – doubtful, given how deeply unsubtle I’ve been – I’m a big fan of Bucharest and had a bloody brilliant time there, not least on our penultimate night when we hit the town like the two tequila fuelled tourists we were. You most likely missed the pic of a sign reading “aren’t we all Sinners?” in my first travel diary, or perhaps wondered why on earth I felt the need to include it. After all, it’s not exactly the most gorgeous thing in the world. But Sinners was the place Holly and I spent a fair bit of our Big Bad Bucharest Night Out so it will forever have a special place in might heart and is definitely solely to blame for the next day’s mind melting hangover… All the bar’s fault, nothing to do with me being a fool who lacks self control in the face of a two-for-one cocktail offer, obviously.

The next day got off to a slightly slow start but once Holly finally successfully got me to shower, we headed out into the glorious sunshine and off to get in some culture. If you listen to one piece of advice from me it is this: there is no better way to battle a hangover than putting on a gorgeous outfit and getting out and about instead of festering in your own filth and regret. The effect doing that has astounds me Every. Single. Time… At 25 years old, pathetic I know.

Anyway, our first port of call was The National Museum of Art of Romania a vast and truly magnificent mass of sky high cream pillars behind wrought iron gates. Sounds impressive, no? And I haven’t even mentioned the enormous array of art within its walls. The museum is Romania’s prime holder of Romanian, European and Oriental art. Located in the former Royal Palace in Bucharest, it includes the National Gallery (Romanian medieval and modern art) and the European Art Gallery. Aside from the numerous temporary exhibitions it hosts, visitors to the National Museum can also explore the former Throne Hall and other spaces of historical relevance. There is a LOT to see there and I’d definitely recommend going, ideally not with a throbbing headache.

After meeting our cultural quota we decided it was high time for some food and a cool glass of rosé. A wander through some of the city’s most gorgeous leafy streets led us to La Mama, a place we discovered was in fact a Romanian restaurant chain and where I decided to take a risk by ordering the mysteriously named “green snack”. I did not regret it. Before we knew it (ok there may have been more than one rosé consumed) it was time to get back to the InterContinental, shoot some more pictures and get ready for dinner at Joseph.

Part of the InterContinental’s Insider Experiences programme, Joseph is a truly special restaurant and somewhere I feel very lucky to have wined, dined and had a wonderful time. Having looked up the menu in advance (obviously! I mean, who doesn’t do that?) I was thoroughly over excited to try the Tuna Tartare and Miso Glazed Salmon, both of which did not disappoint. We ate and drank Sancerre outside in a tea light strewn garden until finally the time came to waddle back to the car and be whizzed back to the hotel and our beds.

The biggest of thank you’s to InterContinental Hotels and Quintessentially for an incredible experience I definitely won’t forget! Until next time Bucharest…
