Unless you’ve been studiously avoiding Style.com, Instagram and every single February issue then you can’t help to have noticed that the 70’s are the decade du jour for SS15. I’ve never really thought of this ten year sartorial period as a personal fave. Boho tresses and hippy dresses aren’t exactly my cup of tea. I’m more of a pin flashing, shift dress wearing sixties kind of chick really. But then of course, the 70’s weren’t all Woodstock and tie die. The fact that those images are the ones that immediately spring to my mind would thoroughly upset my university tutors; no Fashion History & Theory graduate should have such a clichéd impression of a multi faceted style era that, quite rightly, continues to inspire designers today. If the seventies references all over the SS15 catwalks were anything to go by, there are a myriad of ways to interpret its iconic stylistic motifs. From flares, florals and flowing locks to cheesecloth, fur collars, suede, denim, rich earthy shades and billowing frocks; this decade caters to all tastes and spawned God knows how many perennial style icons. It’s no wonder designers continue to revisit it! As for the exquisite cotton sundresses and mustard suede skirting seen on the Chloé catwalks, that was enough to turn even the most androgynous of dressers. Fashion, like art, theatre, music or pop culture, has an uncanny way of seeping into your subconscious and I put this outfit on without even realising that I was paying homage to the 1970s, and one of the new season’s biggest trends. It is, unsurprisingly, a preppy, city, unsuitable for festivals take on the look, and one I love all the more for those reasons because it just felt so “me”. Tall boots, poloneck sweater, crocodile skin and vegetable hues… And there was me thinking I couldn’t do 70’s!
And now, over to you. Will you be partaking in this season’s seventies revival? If so, what pieces are topping your wish list?
Love Ella. X
